MacDuff, J.R. – A Book for the Bereaved

A Book for the Bereaved
by John MacDuff, 1883

In this 15 chapter book by MacDuff deals with words for the bereaved. Some of his chapters are the death of a child, of an only son, of a brother, of an only daughter, of a king, second causes, asleep in Jesus, the power of God.

“Brothers and sisters, we want you to know the truth about those who have died, so that you will not be sad, as are those who have no hope. We believe that Jesus died and rose again, and so we believe that God will take back with Jesus those who have died BELIEVING in Him. So then, comfort one another with these words.” 1 Thessalonians 4:13-14, 18

And I heard a voice from heaven saying, “Write this: Blessed are the dead who die in the Lord from now on.” “Blessed indeed,” says the Spirit, “that they may rest from their labors, for their deeds follow them!” Revelation 14:13

“He will wipe all tears from their eyes—and there will be no more death, suffering, crying, or pain! These things of the past are gone forever! He who OVERCOMES will inherit all this, and I will be his God and he will be my son.” Revelation 21:4, 7

“All who BELIEVE in God’s Son have eternal life. Those who don’t obey the Son will never experience eternal life, but the wrath of God remains upon them.” John 3:36 Continue reading

Arnold, T. – The Christian Life: Its Course, Its Hindrances, and Its Helps.

The Christian Life: Its Course, Its Hindrances, and Its Helps.

by Thomas Arnold, D.D, Head Master of Rugby School, and Late Fellow of Oriel College, Oxford.

From the Fifth London Edition.
1856.

“As far as the principle on which Archbishop Laud and his followers acted went to re-actuate the idea of the church, as a co-ordinate and living power by right of Christ’s institution and express promise, I go along with them; but I soon discover that by the church they meant the clergy, the hierarchy exclusively, and then I fly off from them in a tangent.

“For it is this very interpretation of the church, that, according to my conviction, constituted the first and fundamental apostasy; and I hold it for one of the greatest mistakes of our polemical divines, in their controversies with the Romanists, that they trace all the corruptions of the gospel faith to the Papacy.”–COLERIDGE,

Literary Remains, vol. iii. p. 386.

This is a book of 30+ sermons on different aspects of the Christian life. Continue reading

Boyce, J.P. – Abstract of Systematic Theology

Abstract of Systematic Theology

Abstract of Systematic Theology
By James Petigru Boyce

Abstract of Systematic Theology contains forty-two essays ranging in topic from the doctrines of God, the Trinity, and humanity, to creation, providence, and justification. Boyce also wrote extensively on the issues of election, atonement, and the immortality of the soul. Boyce’s theology was heavily influenced by Charles Hodge, and he used Hodge’s Systematic Theology text at the Southern Baptist Seminary. The essays found in Abstract of Systematic Theologywere originally intended to supplement the content of Boyce’s systematic theology classes at the seminary from 1859–1888. Boyce compiled and completed Abstract: “it is no mere logic chopping treatise but is vibrant with an experimental faith centered in Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior… .” Published in 1887.
