Bates, W. – The Great Duty of Resignation

The Great Duty of Resignation
By William Bates

This is a work on resigning oneself’s to God’s will, based on Jesus’ prayer in Mat 26:39 in the Garden of Gethsemane, when he submitted himself to whatever is God the Father’s will.

Matthew 26:39 – ‘And he went a little farther, and fell on his face, and prayed, saying, O my Father, if it be possible, let this cup pass from me: nevertheless not as I will, but as thou wilt.’

CONTENTS:

Preface.
Explanation of the duty of resignation.

Old Carpenter Tools of his Trade
is an explanation of why I, Pastor-Missionary David Cox, write my own materials like tracts, books, sermons, Sunday School material, etc. We produce the material that we use in our ministry and also for evangelism.
Read the short article: Old Carpenter Tools of his Trade.

Arguments to convince us of this duty of resignation.

1. God’s supreme right over us.
2. His righteousness in all His ways.
3. His uncontrollable power.
4. His paternal love in sending afflictions.
It is proved from:
(1.) His gracious design in sending them.
(2.) His effectual support under them.
(3.) The happy issue out of them.
5. His infinite wisdom orders all things for the best.

Motives to persuade us of this duty of resignation.
1. The example of Christ in his suffereings.
2. The examples of the suffering saints in all ages.
3. All creatures obey the will of their Creator.
4. It is our most glorious perfection, to have our wills united to the divine will.
5. It is our felicity quietly to resign our wills to the will of God.

Directions how to perform this duty of resignation.
1. Faith in the divine providence and promises will compose the soul.
2. Let God be the supreme object of our affections.
3. Let us moderate our valuation of things below.
4. A prudent forecast of future evils will arm us with patience to sustain them.
5. Serious reflections upon our guilt and desert will suppress impatience.
6. Reflect upon blessings as well as evils.
7. Pray frequently and fervently for this disposition.

Give a Cup of Water in my Name
Matthew 10:42 And whosoever shall give to drink unto one of these little ones a cup of cold water only in the name of a disciple, verily I say unto you, he shall in no wise lose his reward.

Christians who give even a small cup of water will not lose their reward for doing this. God will not overlook their effort to help others in the work of the Lord. To help others is rewarded by God, especially when you are helping the weak, the small young ones (think new believers), the helpless like widows in the Bible, those who cannot provide for themselves. So, my websites are for these kinds of people. I am providing material that is good sound doctrinal material, fundamentalist, conservative, biblical material.

But what I am doing is in the name of the Lord. I am not trying to get rich, but I am just trying to pay my bills from this ministry. My wife and I have personally supported our internet sites with my sermons, tracts, books, etc. and other good solid works for some 20 years now, paying for everything from our living expenses. We have had donations from some few people, about 3 or 4 a year, mostly under $30. That doesn't even begin to address the hundreds of dollars we pay hosting companies to maintain this ministry. While our downloads from these sites reach 40 gigabytes per month, donations don't seem to be in people's minds.

So even a small $5 donation to help us out will allow you to participate with me in this ministry, and you will receive rewards in eternity also. May God bless you richly in heaven for your generosity in promoting God's work. If you cannot donate anything, ⁣ that is alright, just say a prayer for this ministry and email me saying that you prayed for us so that we can give thanks for you before the throne of grace. Thank you.
